Join us on our captivating pit firing session, a gathering of potters trying something different. Together we release control of the creative process and experience what earth and fire have to offer. Engage your inner artist as we explore this ancient pit firing process, the oldest known method for firing pottery. Celebrated for its mesmerising and unpredictable results.
Our process commences with preparing previously bisqued pots in saggars of aluminium foil or on its own in the fire. The pots are nestled together in a barrel or pit in the ground and are surrounded by combustible materials such as wood shavings, dried manure, leaves, oxides and salts to affect the surface of the pots. The oxides, salts and combustibles interact with the clay, air, and fire, giving birth to unforeseen shades and intricate patterns. We gather again the next day to clean and seal our pieces.
